This site has a lot of picturesof hoover playin what they called hoover-ball. The reason for this hoover ball game was to kepp Herbert in shape. Hoover-ball is a combination of tennis, volleyball and medicine ball. White House physician Admiral Joel T. Boone invented the game to keep President Hoover physically fit.
"It required less skill than tennis, was faster and more vigorous, and therefore gave more exercise in a short time," Hoover wrote in his Memoirs.
"It is more strenuous than either boxing, wrestling or football," wrote Will Irwin, a friend of Hoover's, in a 1931 article "The President Watches His Waistline" in Physical Culture magazine. "It has the virtue of getting at nearly every muscle in the body."

On this site there is a lot of information about Hoover threw out his life. The site has a time line of Hoover’s life from 1874 to 1964. Also on the other side are other major events that happen during that time/year. This is a good site to find out what was going on around the world at the time and to find out what was happening with Hoover at that as well.
1928 Hoover elected President of the United States.
1929 Served as 31st President of the United States. Made good will tour of Latin America after the election. 1929 Stock market crashed.
1930 Construction began on Hoover Dam on the Colorado River.
1931 President Hoover signed an act that made "The Star Spangled Banner" our national anthem.

Inaugural Address of Herbert Hoover
March 24, 1929
Monday March 4, 1929 in Washington DC; Chief Justice William Howard Taft administered the oath on the East Portico of the Capitol.
http://hoover.archives.gov/info/inauguralspeech.html
This is Hebert Hoover’s actual inaugural. In his inaugural it talks about Our Progress, The Failure of Our System of Criminal Justice, Enforcement of the 18th Amendment, A National Investigation, The Relation of Government to Business, Cooperation by the Government, education, world peace, Public Health, Party Responsibilities, Special Session of the Congress, Other Mandates From The Election, and the Conclusion. This inauguration speech was very informative and it talked a lot about what was going on at that timing before Hoover went into office. Also what he was going to do when he got into office. I definitely think this is a really good primary source.

The Ordeal of Herbert Hoover
By Richard Norton Smith and Timothy Walch http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2004/summer//hoover-1.html
In this story it gives a lot of information about Hoover and how people looked at him as a bad guy instead of a good guy. They also mentioned how Hoover's presidency remains largely an untold story. It also mentioned that it was an uphill campaign for Hoover's Democratic opponent. It says how the depression start and how it mounted to the great depression In a single day, sixteen million shares were traded—a record—and thirty billion dollars vanished into thin air. Also they talk about how people always tried to give him a bad reputation;; But this sports-loving President couldn't relax in public. For example, he stopped one afternoon to watch a sandlot ball game, cheering on the kids at play and informally chatting with them after the game ended. Colleagues urged the President to return the next day and be photographed with the boys, saying it would be good for his public image. Hoover would do nothing of the kind! It was one thing to relax, however infrequently, quite another to perform. "You can't make a Teddy Roosevelt out of me!" he proclaimed, to the despair of advisers.

http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2007/fall/marsh.html
on this website is a biograohy of William J. Marsh. Marsh talks about his time during the great depression and talks a lot about Herbert Hoover. William stated the great depression was not Hoover's fault. A senator who criticized the President "ought to be ashamed of himself. William also talks about Herbert in many great ways like calling him a wonderful man and saying he did a lot for his country. Here are some of the quotes I took from the website that William J. Marsh had said "Herbert Hoover has done a lot of good for this country,” "there is always one fellow in the crowd who wants to be boss." Hoover became a successful mining engineer, and he saved Belgium from starvation. Hoover is a "wonderful man," who "holds the highest position in the world."

My Revised Thesis Statement and Introduction
Even though people blamed Herbert Hoover for contributing to the great depression, He should be looked at differently for the way he handled it during that disaster.
My topic is about Herbert Hoover and his life during presidency in the Great Depression. For NHD I will be talking about how Hoover handled one off the biggest disasters in American history. The reason I pick this was I thought it would be interesting to learn more about his life during that time because some people fight weather he was the fault for the depression back in the 1920’s. Also because myself and many other people believe that we may be going through another great depression with Wall Street, cashing and all the money going over to the troops in Iraq. With this knowledge I can learn what they could have done differently to save the markets from crashing and what are they doing now that they did then.

the bonus march: Herbert Hoover’s view
In this site they are talking about how the average price of stocks rose more than 40 percent. Hoover hoped to help maintain the boom by expanding social and economic policies. They also mention The rising markets led financial institutions to grant millions of dollars in easy credit loans, fueling the fever. The web also tells when all hell brake lose, On October 26, 1929, the bubble finally burst completely when 16 million shares were traded, and the indexes dropped some 43 points.
I think this site will be a really good source because it’s very descriptive about what was going on at that time and how the people felt. Also it tells you what was going on with the stock markets and ho businesses were crashing.

a few quotes from herbert hoover
About the time we think we can make ends meet, somebody moves the ends.
Herbert Hoover
America
- a great social and economic experiment, noble in motive and far-reaching in purpose.
Herbert Hoover
- More quotations on: [America]
Engineering is a great profession. There is the satisfaction of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realisation in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings homes to men or women. Then it elevates the standard of living and adds to the comforts of life. This is the engineer's high privilege.
Herbert Hoover
- More quotations on: [Engineering]
My country owes me nothing. It gave me, as it gives every boy and girl, a chance. It gave me schooling, independence of action, opportunity for service and honor. In no other land could a boy from a country village, without inheritance or influential friends, look forward with unbounded hope.
Herbert Hoover
Older men declare war, but it is the youth that must fight and die.
Herbert Hoover
Words without actions are the assassins of idealism.
Herbert Hoover
- More quotations on: [Actions]
The great liability of the engineer compared to men of other professions is that his works are out in the open where all can see them. His acts, step by step, are in hard substance. He cannot bury his mistakes in the grave like the doctors. He cannot argue them into thin air or blame the judge like the lawyers. He cannot, like the architects, cover his failures with trees and vines. He cannot, like the politicians, screen his sort-comings by blaming his opponents and hope the people will forget. The engineer simply cannot deny he did it. If his works do not work, he is damned.

It also has a picture of him Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone at Edison's 82nd birthday. Ft. Myers, Florida, February 11, 1929. This site also tells u when he started his presidency and when he ended 1929 – 1933 and that he was the 31st president of the U.S. I learned a lot from this website that many people may not know like he approved the "Star-Spangled Banner" as our national anthem and we always sing the banner at sports games but never thought twice about when or who approved it.

Cleaning my block for the spring cleaning day was very interesting the thing I like the most is that everyone who usually stay to them selves came out to help and the whole block worked together to make our street nice. When it was all cleaned and done the block was spot less compared from when we first started when chip bags and leaves were everywhere. After we were done me and my family went into the house for a couple of hours and then went to the Lincoln financial center to eat and see Michael Nutter although we left before he got there but overall we had fun and if Nutter was to have it again I would do it.

The beginning of the mob to Bruno
The mafia in Philly started in 1957 the mob boss was Joseph Ida. In 1957 he quit being boss because he was caught by cops in “The Infamous Approaching Raiding” in November of 1957; it was this gigantic meeting of all the mob bosses of America. They all came together in upstate New York in a town called, Approaching and they all got busted by the police. Ida was one of the guys who got busted and didn’t like fact that his name was in the news paper so he quit being boss and went back to Sicily. The man that had replaced him was Dominic Pollina and his under boss Angelo Bruno but there was a problem Pollina didn’t trust Bruno because he was very popular and was one of the biggest money earners. So Pollina gave an order to have Bruno killed. The man that he gives the order to warns Bruno instead of killing him. That’s when Angelo does an amazing thing and goes to New York City and goes to the mafia commission and pleads his case and says “I’m not expiring against Pollina, I shouldn’t killed “ he basically put his life in hand of the commission they could have told him “well Pollina wants you dead your going to be killed” but instead they rule in his favor and said “your right you shouldn’t be killed we are going to make you boss of the Philly mob and tells Bruno you can do whatever you want with Pollina.” Most of the time you would kill that person but no Bruno just tells him to leave and not to have anything to do with them anymore. From then on Bruno became boss of La Cost Nostra from 1959 to 1990 and that’s when the people in Philly mob as we know today like Salvatore “Chucky Merlino, Joey Merlino, Nicky Scarfo and …… start to come into play and become bosses.

How mafia first developed
The mafia first developed in Sicily. The word mafia first developed in Sicily. The word mafia came from the Sicilian word, Mafioso meaning family. Today, mafia stands for a loose association of a criminal group. These groups come together by blood, oath, or sworn secrecy. By the nineteenth century, the mafia had become known as a network of criminals and thugs dominated most of Sicily member. In the beginning the mafia had no centralized organization. They were just in small groups. Each group was considered a district. The mafia became powerful by using scare tactics to people who were weaker then them. With little power they had they started to scare people into voting the way they wanted. It wasn’t much longer until they started running their way around the police and owning weapons (guns)

NHD reflection
My reflection of NHD is a memorable one. I think NHD was a great experience that I will never forget. This year it didn’t go to far into the competition but next year I’m hoping I will get much further and possibly win. The 2 things that I think held me back from going a lot further than I did was I didn’t pick my group members correctly but instead pick my friend the other thing is that I think kind of lowered my chance of going far is that I picked a subject that was too advanced and I think the judges were looking more a historical topic after all it is called National History Day. Joey Merlino was also very hard to find a lot of information about him since he is still a live and holding a lot of secrets about the mob. Also since Merlino is in the present a lot of his guys are still under cover so again I could not find a lot on the mob. Next year I am most likely going work by myself and do a paper and this time I am going to do a topic that grabs the judges attention.

My final grade
The grade I think I should get is 100. I think I should get this grade for two reasons. The first reason is because I always do what I am told. Also I work my butt off to finish all my work and do it right.
I also just want to add that I hope I get a 100 because I did last report card. If I get any other grade I’ll be going down which I already have in every class, I really don’t want that since I am trying so hard and getting done everything ahead of time.
I can prove that I deserve that grade because I am always done my work and working on the next thing. Even if people ask me what to do I’ll help them if I can. Also I deserve a good grade because I think that I got all + for behavior, and I only talk when talked to or necessary. These are all the reasons I should get a really good grade.

Washington was an author of 20 books, including 2 autobiographies, a biography of Fredrick Douglas and umber of education text. He was very nice and was always trying to help the young black kids get an education. Washington was an influential voice among late 19th – and early 20th African American culture leader. He might not of known what he wanted to be when he was younger but indeed came a long way from being unknown and a slave.

Booker T. Washington made a big contribution to blacks not only given them an education but by making another school for blacks and speaking up for them. His work made many young want an education and be like him. The effect he made was a pretty big one a lot of Africans wanted an education. His legacy a an educator continues to inform the mission of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, which in 1985 was granted university status and remains committed to the improvement of blacks life. It’s now known as Tuskegee University.

I want you to know that Booker T Washington was a great leader and role model. Also that he was mixed with black and white. We benefit today is more and more kids are wanting an education and are making something out of their lives and not letting anything get in there way. The main thing that impressed me was that even though he was a slave he didn’t let anything get in his way of learning and getting education even in the time of war nothing could stop this man from wanting to make something of his life.

The thing that has most inspired me about this man is that he was living in one of the most horrible conditions but yet still wanted an education. I would love to be like this man and have a great education and make a school for kids to go and have kids look up to me as a great legacy for education. Also accomplish how many things he has like writing biographies and autobiographies.

Should Huckleberry Finn Be Taught In CHS
I think Huck Finn should be taught in CHS. Due to what I read it has a lot of things about history in it, like how meanly blacks were treated and how the government was not as advanced as it is today. One example of the government being ignorant is when Huck Finn killed a pig to fake his own death. If government was advanced as it is today they would have figured out it was animal blood and not human right away. On the other hand I feel we shouldn’t read it because I think it is inappropriate for them to be saying the n word as much as they do. Besides all the negativity the book is really good and educating about our history and how things were then and how they are now. It also makes me and others see how far we have come from them and how close blacks and whites are today.
